2018 Volvo XC60

New for the latest model year, the XC60 is a premium compact crossover that stands out as Volvo's best-selling model. It shares its modular platform -- and much of its design -- with the brand's bigger 90-series models, including the XC90 and the S90. Overview The XC60 offers space for up to five passengers and their gear. It boasts a level of comfort and luxury that rivals well-established competitors from Germany and Japan. It doesn't copy the competition, though. Volvo drew inspiration from Scandinavian design trends to create a minimalist, functional, yet aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. The passengers travel surrounded by soft-touch materials, soft leather, and real wood trim. Volvo replaced the analog instrument cluster with a digital, configurable screen that presents information in a clear and legible way. The tablet-style screen integrated into the center console runs the XC60's infotainment system. It's a fairly straight-forward unit with good graphics and quick response times. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility come standard. Trunk space checks in at 22.4 cubic feet with both rows of seats left up and 63.3 cubes with the rear seats folded flat. Those figures are about average for the segment. Technical specifications XC60 have three powertrains to choose from. Every version comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Named T5, the entry-level engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It returns 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 in a combined cycle. The mid-range T6 adds a supercharger to the turbocharged 2.0-liter for a total output of 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy figures drop to 21, 27, and 23, respectively. The top-end T8 is a gasoline-electric powertrain that teams the supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor mounted over the rear axle. The setup provides a stout 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque, enough for a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.9 seconds. Alternatively, the XC60 T8 can drive on electricity alone for up to 17 miles. Fuel economy figures for the hybrid model check in at 26 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 in a combined cycle. Standard and optional features The XC60 line-up includes three trim levels named Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription, respectively. The list of standard features includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, silver roof rails, two-zone climate control, leather upholstery, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, a 330-watt sound system, and LED headlights. Volvo offers numerous option packages. The navigation package adds -- you guessed it -- navigation. The vision package brings Park Assist Pilot, parking sensors on both ends, power-folding side mirrors, and a blind spot information system. The convenience package bundles heated wiper blades, Volvo's semi-autonomous Pilot Assist technology, keyless entry and drive, a HomeLink transceiver, and drive mode settings, among other features. There are standalone options, too, including heated front seats, heated rear seats, an air suspension, and a 1,500-watt, 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Many of the optional features listed above come standard as buyers move up in the trim hierarchy. Occupant safety All XC60s feature dual front, side, and side curtain airbags in addition to a knee airbag for the driver. A tire pressure monitoring system and a Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS) also come standard. Additionally, Volvo includes electronic driving aids like oncoming lane mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and road sign information. Key competitors Volvo aimed the XC60 directly at the leaders of the premium compact crossover segment. Its rivals include the BMW X3, the Audi Q5, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Buyers can also look at the Lexus RX.
